In Memory
Katherine Ann Patrick
October 23, 1944 - October 17, 2007

Deep peace of the running wave to you
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you
Deep peace of the shining stars to you
Deep peace of the infinite peace to you. --adapted from ancient Gaelic runes

Tribute
Farewell, faithful friend. Your blessed gift for skewering life's contradictions has brightened our lives and lifted our spirits over these many years. Now your death has diminished the world's magic. In your photography, you gave us new eyes with which to perceive delight in the ordinary and tenderly crafted words with which to explore life's meaning. Your commentary sparkled with incisive wit and intellect, which you yourself referred to as your keen sense of fun. We will miss your insights, but we will look for you in the children and the flowers, kittens, and clouds.

Your devoted blog fans,
Yackie, Melrose and Suellen
(Jackie, Bill and Sue)

We bathe your palms
In the showers of wine,
In the crook of the kindling,
In the seven elements,
In the sap of the tree.
In the milk of honey.

In the nine choice gifts
In your clear beloved face,
The gift of form,
The gift of voice,
The gift of fortune,
The gift of goodness,
The gift of eminence,
The gift of charity,
The gift of integrity,
The gift of nobility,
The gift of apt speech. --traditional Gaelic

It is hoped that those of you who have visited this site for the photographs, wit, stories, and humor would leave your comments.

my sister waits for the elevator

i have a question:

1. why is it that whenever you go to sleep in anything other than your own
bed (an armchair, for instance), somebody always wakes you up?
they use the excuse that ''you should get up and go to bed for real,''
or, even more despicable, ''i thought you looked uncomfortable.''
uncomfortable? while i'm asleep? i could be lying flat out on the
roof with my head hanging down over the edge and still be comfortable,
as long as i was sound asleep.

just leave me alone.

when i was a kid i had a 1950's vinyl shirley temple doll, which was nice but
no big deal. i always thought it would be swell to have a genuine 1930's
composition shirley. so i turned to ebay. i picked up several old shirleys.
the one you see above is the best of all; and it's no coincidence that it's also
the last one bought. by the time i got her i had learned how to read an ebay
ad, and how to tell the difference between what the ad says, and what it means.

i have decided to share my wisdom with youse.

for example, if the ad says ''doll has been gently loved,'' what that means is
doll has one leg and most of hair is gone.

2. dolly barely shows her age at all!
dolly's eyes are blown and she has more crazing than a riverbed
    in august.

3. dolly's eyes need a little adjustment.
    dolly looks like chuckie.

4. doll has been beautifully restored.
doesn't look like the same kid. this is often a case of ''i still have my
grandfather's hatchet. it's had 4 new heads and 2 new handles, but it's still
    my grandfather's hatchet.''

5. i think dolly's outfit may be original!
dolly is wearing what could only be described as a mommy-made
burnoose. if you can show me a movie in which little shirley wears a
caftan, maybe we can make a deal.

another tip: ebay auctions let you know the screen name of the next highest
bidder. if that screen name incorporates the bidder's main interest, watch out.
for instance, if you're after jeanette macdonald and nelson eddy memorabilia
and you find you're up against naughtymarietta tischman, back
off, and spare yourself the blood loss. you ain't gonna win this one.

i used to work with a woman who told me her daughter was working
on a master's degree in liberry science.

i've often wondered if the daughter knew how to pronounce it.

tail o' the pup, side view

in september 2005 i spent 6 days in los angeles, which resulted in my 'children on
their birthdays' series, which i actually plan to finish some day.

i then flew home to duckburg.

analogy #1: in 1957, when they were filming the movie *an affair to remember* and had
just shot the scene where cary grant and deborah kerr share their first kiss, the
director sighed, ''okay, kids; let's all go home to our wretched wives.''

analogy #2: on the last day of filming on *e.t.*, steven spielberg found 7-year-old drew
barrymore crying her eyes out. when he asked what was wrong, she sobbed, ''i don't
want to go back to regular life!''

on the other hand, duckburg does have its advantages.

advantage #1:

eileen's here.

we went over to susan's tonight to watch some videos.

the first one was william shatner in *kingdom of the spiders.* not a bad horror
flick until it occurs to you that if everybody in town had a can of raid and knew
how to use it there'd have been no movie.

the second was *atomic twister* about a nuclear plant being struck by a couple of
tornadoes. this one was so crammed with characters that they actually forgot one
of them altogether; it was a guy in a volvo trying to outrun a twister. we never find
out if he made it. everybody in this movie hates everybody else in it, and none of them
can agree on what to do about this crippled reactor; so it's mostly just 2 hours of
people bitching at each other over the wind noises in the background.

my favorite scene is where a girl is pinned under her car, which has been flipped over
on top of her by a tornado. she's moaning as if she's on the point of death. fortunately
her ex-fiance just happens to come along, and manages to pull her out from under all
the wreckage, after which she's perfectly fine. the only mark on her is a little spot on
her face which looks suspiciously like ringworm.

the 3rd video was a pbs program about outrageous american landmarks, buildings
shaped like oranges or milk bottles or ducks; and i got all excited because i had
actually seen 2 of them.

the photo above is not upside down; the building is, right down to the lamp posts and
trees. this one is in orlando, which is one spooky little town.
