Katherine Ann Patrick
October 23, 1944 - October 17, 2007

Deep peace of the running wave to you
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you
Deep peace of the shining stars to you
Deep peace of the infinite peace to you.
--adapted from ancient Gaelic runes

Tribute
Farewell, faithful friend. Your blessed gift for skewering life's contradictions has brightened our lives and lifted our spirits over these many years. Now your death has diminished the world's magic. In your photography, you gave us new eyes with which to perceive delight in the ordinary and tenderly crafted words with which to explore life's meaning. Your commentary sparkled with incisive wit and intellect, which you yourself referred to as your keen sense of fun. We will miss your insights, but we will look for you in the children and the flowers, kittens, and clouds.

Your devoted blog fans,
Yackie, Melrose and Suellen
(Jackie, Bill and Sue)

We bathe your palms
In the showers of wine,
In the crook of the kindling,
In the seven elements,
In the sap of the tree.
In the milk of honey.

In the nine choice gifts
In your clear beloved face,
The gift of form,
The gift of voice,
The gift of fortune,
The gift of goodness,
The gift of eminence,
The gift of charity,
The gift of integrity,
The gift of nobility,
The gift of apt speech.

I have followed Katherine's blog on and off for the last couple of years, and what a delight it was. What a wit. What a way with words. And what a keen observer of people. I'm going to spend some time over the next few days going back through her blog.

Thanks, Katherine. You gave me a laugh and a sense of discovery at every visit.

I broke a bit of my back tooth today and spent the rest of the day worrying - what if they can't fix it? what if they have to extract it? what if I have to wait for months for an appointment?

Putting the boys to bed tonight (who you were always so kind and lovely about) I had to give myself a shake and say 'it's only a bit of a tooth for goodness sake!!' Things could always be worse. And then I come online tonight and realise this loss. Trust you to put things into perspective!

Katherine - I'm sorry I didn't visit as much as I should but I know you will understand. Life just passes by so quickly.

I will miss you.

Go bless and sleep in peace.

I'm speechless. I can't believe you're gone Kass. Not only your blog and your photography meant so much to me, but your wit and your humor and even your complete compassion when I needed you. My deepest condolences to your family. Especially your sister. I'll miss you so much Kass.

So Katherine is gone to the other side, that’s a tremendous shock and hard to grasp in one day. One might think that knowing someone in the cyberspace is not like real life, but that I have never met Katherine in real life is in fact not a difference, it makes no difference in liking and no difference in tears. I had the feeling of knowing her because sharing photos of your everyday life and of what your eye catches, sharing one’s thoughts and mailing with each other, is an intense sharing. And how I liked her ! Her writings made me smile. I was never fond of black-and-white photos until one day I came on ‘Aperture priority’ , I went through all her photos. It was a 100% match. Her B&W’s were sublime and so was she. If I had to pick a top three of contemporary art in photography, Katherine would be one of them. I am so glad that she knew how truly I appreciated and enjoyed her photography, and her view on life. I can, without any effort, mirror many of her pictures on my mind since I tasted, explored and admired every detail of it. And I will miss her very much. I send my condolences to those she loved so much and who have now the most difficult task to learn to live without her presence. I send warmth, consolation, energy and courage to her sister Eileen and her friend Jacky.

Jackie emailed me today about your passing and of the circumstances,Kathy.
Eileen, what can I say? I didn't know either of you well, or hardly at all, really.
My memory of Kathy is of a hilarious thing she did when we were all in college.
There was a nurse in the 'clinic'..and that's a stretch whose first question when you walked in the door with a complaint was 'How are your bowels?'
And Kathy had taken a cover of Time magazine of Nehru(if you're old enough to remember who he was.. wore a funny white hat all t he time) and kind of re-drew it to look like a nurse's cap and she had written 'How are your bowels?'
I believe Kathy was uh..um...'asked' to remove it immediately! Her humor was ahead of it's time in the innocent political early 60's.
So...to all of you who read her blogs, I am the 'judy h.' she mentions in one of her blogs and I was so proud to read it...I still know the words. (s)
Rest in peace,Kathy...and apologise to Mr. Nehru when you see him.

May she rest in peace. My heart and thoughts go to her family and friends.

My heart goes out to her family, friends and blog visitors on their terrible loss.

But, no doubt, she's already asked God if he wants his portrait taken by a true professional.

i was saddened to hear the news. i didn't know Katherine at all, but always enjoyed visting the site to read her humorous tales; occasionally entering into a bit of transatlantic banter too as a result. in fact i was only the other day thinking that i hadn't seen anything posted by her of late and wondered about that. she will be missed.

We started our blogs almost at the same time...maybe 2 years ago. I always came back here to see the pictures and texts. My blog (gabriela cravo e canela) was closed a couple of months ago and i don´t know why i came here today...Like Janice said, i´m speechless...

I hope everything is well with you that are close to her. My best wishes...

I always, always enjoyed Katherine's site, so unusual, what a perspective. She touched me, and I trust you who knew her best will be comforted by her amazing life while lived.

I've been thinking about what to write since I saw the comment on my blog about Katherine's passing. I don't have the words to really say what I want to, but I wanted to write something to say how much her blog was enjoyed and how much she will be missed.

May the blessing of the rain be on you-
the soft sweet rain.
May it fall upon your spirit
so that all the little flowers may spring up,
and shed their sweetness on the air.
May the blessing of the great rains be on you,
may they beat upon your spirit
and wash it fair and clean,
and leave there many a shining pool
where the blue of heaven shines,
and sometimes a star.

Thank you...........I love you!
